DESCRIPTION:Jay Hudson is a third generation beekeeper with 16 years of experience in beekeeping. In this presentation\, Jay will review a brief history of the art of beekeeping\, the importance of honeybees in our ecosystem\, the roles of bees within the colony\, the components of a beehive\, and the challenges beekeepers face today. The mountains in both Henry and Patrick Counties are part of a unique honey production region and there will be a couple of varieties of honey from this area for tasting! This program\, which is free and open to the public\, will be Tuesday\, October 14 at 10:30am and will be held in the Susan L. Adkins Memorial Meeting Room.

DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Arts will kick off the holiday season with the annual lighting of Art Garden Christmas tree from 4-6 p.m.\, Thursday\, Dec. 4 in the Gravely-Lester Art Garden. \nEnjoy holiday music by the Martinsville High School Jazz Band and the First Baptist Church Choir\, Gale Buck: Storytelling Santa\, snacks and crafts. The much-anticipated parade will begin at 5:30 pm\, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony will be in Ridgeway Park following the parade. \nThey will have pictures with Santa\, free cookies\, hot chocolate\, and roasted chestnut samples. The Magna Vista Choir will be performing on the gazebo. They will also have food and dessert vendors\, and will be selling Ridgeway Christmas Apparel.  \nThey will be collecting donations for the Henry County Animal Shelter. A craft for kids and snacks will be available. This event is admission free. All ages are welcome. \nThis event is held in conjunction with the National African American Read-in\, a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together\, centering on African American books and authors. The initiative was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.
