SUMMARY:Dr. Elliot Engel: Blackbeard! Pirate Enemy Number One
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Elliot Engel returns to Piedmont Arts with “Blackbeard! Pirate Enemy Number One\,” a lecture on the infamous pirate\, on Thursday\, Oct. 2. \nEveryone knows that Blackbeard has one of the most fearsome reputations of any pirate in history. What is not always known is the astonishing story of how Edward Teach\, a quiet and educated man\, transformed himself into this dreadful pirate and became known as the “Scourge of the High Seas.” Dr. Engel provides all the hair-raising details\, background and context. \nEngel lives in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, where he has taught at NC State University\, the University of North Carolina and Duke University. He earned an MA and Ph.D. from UCLA and was awarded that university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. He has written ten books published in England\, Japan\, Turkey and the United States. His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens aired on PBS stations nationwide. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines. He has lectured throughout the United States and on all the continents\, including Antarctica. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in England in 2009 for his academic work and service in promoting Charles Dickens. \nGuests are invited to attend a dinner with Dr. Engel at 5:45 p.m.\, followed by the lecture. Reservations for the dinner must be made in advance by purchasing tickets. Tickets to the dinner and lecture are $50. \nThe lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the galleries and is open to the public. Tickets to the lecture alone are $25. \nThis event is sponsored by King’s Grant.

David Stewart Wiley conducts the Holiday Pops with all the magical elements you have come to expect — high energy\, familiar carols and lots of holiday warmth. \nEvent schedule: \n1:30 p.m. – Lobby and box office open\n2 p.m. – Auditorium opens\n3 p.m. – Concert begins \nFamily or individual adult WIC cardholders with ID receive free general admission. Tickets can be picked up at Piedmont Arts or at the door on the night of the event. Altrusa will collect non-perishable food items for Grace Network in the lobby during the symphony’s performance. \nTickets are $30 for reserved seating\, $20 for general admission and $10 for students in grades K-12. \nSponsored by Brightspeed. The initiative was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Arts’ fabulous fundraiser returns with a fresh slate of local celebrities dancing in support of the arts from 3-5 p.m.\, Saturday\, March 14 at Martinsville High School Auditorium. \nThe contest features eight teams competing to win the most votes\, the highest score from the judges and a set of gorgeous mirror ball trophies. \nYour votes ($1 = 1 vote) benefit your favorite teams and raise money to support Piedmont Arts programming in Martinsville-Henry County. Each team’s final score is made up of a combination of your votes and the judges’ scores. The team with the highest final score wins the grand prize. To double your votes ($1 = 2 votes) and make those dollars really count\, you can apply your total donation toward a Piedmont Arts membership. A $40 minimum is required for this option. \nAdmission tickets are $30 for reserved seating\, $20 for general admission and $10 for students in grades K-12.

A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in the galleries. \n“A Game Apart” provides a glimpse of Jackie Robinson’s life during a bygone era of separate and unequal locker rooms\, of whites-only hotels\, and of restaurants with only a back door for colored athletes to enter. Witness the hopeless humiliation of a star player who was showered with adulation on the field and became a second-hand citizen when he walked off the diamond. Meet Jackie’s compatriots fighting the same battles between the end zones\, inside the ring and around the track. A Game Apart is a powerful lesson of courage through dedication\, perseverance and leadership. \nTickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students in grades K-12.
