SUMMARY:Dr. Elliot Engel: Blackbeard! Pirate Enemy Number One
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Elliot Engel returns to Piedmont Arts with “Blackbeard! Pirate Enemy Number One\,” a lecture on the infamous pirate\, on Thursday\, Oct. 2. \nEveryone knows that Blackbeard has one of the most fearsome reputations of any pirate in history. What is not always known is the astonishing story of how Edward Teach\, a quiet and educated man\, transformed himself into this dreadful pirate and became known as the “Scourge of the High Seas.” Dr. Engel provides all the hair-raising details\, background and context. \nEngel lives in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, where he has taught at NC State University\, the University of North Carolina and Duke University. He earned an MA and Ph.D. from UCLA and was awarded that university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. He has written ten books published in England\, Japan\, Turkey and the United States. His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens aired on PBS stations nationwide. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines. He has lectured throughout the United States and on all the continents\, including Antarctica. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in England in 2009 for his academic work and service in promoting Charles Dickens. \nGuests are invited to attend a dinner with Dr. Engel at 5:45 p.m.\, followed by the lecture. Reservations for the dinner must be made in advance by purchasing tickets. Tickets to the dinner and lecture are $50. \nThe lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the galleries and is open to the public. Tickets to the lecture alone are $25. \nThis event is sponsored by King’s Grant.

Performing is free and all ages\, talents\, and skill levels are welcome! First place adult and youth awards and a Community Choice award will be given out. Judges will include Kelley Pickurel (Owner of StateLine Movement Dance Co.)\, Gracie Agnew (Educator and Community Advocate)\, and Chris Lawless (Owner of Lawless Welding).\nCommunity Choice award will be chosen through audience votes made during the intermission.\nAll performers must sign up through the Spencer-Penn office for an audition time to share what they plan to do on the stage and present their music. Audition dates include Thursday\, September September 25th from 5 to 7 p.m. and Sunday\, September 28th from 2 to 5 p.m. Office hours are Monday\, Tuesday\, and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All talents and performances must be family friendly.\nAdmission is $3 adults and $1 for children under 12. DESCRIPTION:The annual African American Read-in + Family Day will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.\, Saturday\, Feb. 7 at Piedmont Arts. \nVisitors can view books on loan from the collection of Joyce and Kenneth Staples. A craft for kids and snacks will be available. This event is admission free. All ages are welcome. \nThis event is held in conjunction with the National African American Read-in\, a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together\, centering on African American books and authors. The initiative was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. It has reached more than six million participants around the world. \nSponsored by Brightspeed and Carter Bank.

DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Arts’ fabulous fundraiser returns with a fresh slate of local celebrities dancing in support of the arts from 3-5 p.m.\, Saturday\, March 14 at Martinsville High School Auditorium. \nThe contest features eight teams competing to win the most votes\, the highest score from the judges and a set of gorgeous mirror ball trophies. \nYour votes ($1 = 1 vote) benefit your favorite teams and raise money to support Piedmont Arts programming in Martinsville-Henry County. Each team’s final score is made up of a combination of your votes and the judges’ scores. The team with the highest final score wins the grand prize. To double your votes ($1 = 2 votes) and make those dollars really count\, you can apply your total donation toward a Piedmont Arts membership. A $40 minimum is required for this option. \nAdmission tickets are $30 for reserved seating\, $20 for general admission and $10 for students in grades K-12.

DESCRIPTION:Mike Wiley will perform his one-person play “A Game Apart\,” Thursday\, March 26 at Piedmont Arts. A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in the galleries. \n“A Game Apart” provides a glimpse of Jackie Robinson’s life during a bygone era of separate and unequal locker rooms\, of whites-only hotels\, and of restaurants with only a back door for colored athletes to enter. Witness the hopeless humiliation of a star player who was showered with adulation on the field and became a second-hand citizen when he walked off the diamond. Meet Jackie’s compatriots fighting the same battles between the end zones\, inside the ring and around the track. A Game Apart is a powerful lesson of courage through dedication\, perseverance and leadership. \nTickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students in grades K-12.
